Cabin in the Woods (2012) Review

Story telling takes place through many different forms. One can be submerged into a story through a book, a video game, or a movie. Books provide us with great detail and story line, while video games insert us into the story allows us to experience the story as one of the characters roaming free in the story teller’s world. Movies allow us to sit down and experience the story with a high budget spent on fantastic visuals and sound effects. Often people say that books never convert well to movies, and that video game movies just aren’t what they could have been. Cabin in the woods is a movie which feels like a video game but with the excellent detail and story telling of a book. Read moreRead more

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011) Review

Sherlock Holmes, the greatest detective in literature, was brought to the big screen for a modern adaptation several years ago. Guy Ritchie did a great job directing the film, especially by casting Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law as Sherlock Holmes and Watson respectively. After the first film received great reviews and a fantastic reception from fans everywhere, Ritchie brings Holmes back to the big screen in the second film, “A Game of Shadows” where Holmes and Watson square off against their mortal nemesis, Professor Moriarty. Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol (2011) Review

I am a big fan of spy movies and action movies. I have always preferred the James Bond series over the Mission Impossible series. The reasons were simple, I was never really a big fan of Tom Cruise, and I just felt like the previous films were made poorly. Everything was predictable, the action sequences were a let down, and the films were unnecessarily cheesy and dry. I had only heard good things about the new MI film. It was supposed to rejuvenate the series and bring Tom Cruise back into the spotlight. While I was not totally disappointed with it, the movie certainly did not live up to its billing. Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) Review

Comic book movie adaptations generally fall into two categories. They are either horrible or are respectable adaptations that do justice to the comic books that preceded them. It doesn’t seem to matter how the movies are rated, the big name comic book movies always seem to do well at the box office. The majority of the Spider Man series was mediocre at best, yet at the time still set Hollywood box office records. Don’t get me wrong, there have been some excellent comic book movies. The Batman series has been excellent of late, and the Iron Man series is doing especially well. Regardless of execution or character, Spider man, Batman, Hulk, Thor, the X-Men, it doesn’t matter. Fans will go see the movies because they love the characters, and love the series. Captain America is a new addition to the world of comic book movie adaptations. Not as well known as Spiderman or Batman, Captain America was introduced to preclude Marvel’s new Avengers series. Read moreRead more

Limitless (2011) Review

Bradley Cooper has burst onto the Hollywood scene with films like the Hangover, Hangover 2, The A – Team, and Valentines Day. He typically plays the pretty boy heartthrob who has his way with women and gets what he wants. Limitless is a totally different genre and role for Cooper. He plays Eddie Mora, a disheveled writer who has failed at everything. His writing career is a flop, his girlfriend dumps him, and he lives in a filthy little apartment barely affording the minimal rent. Eddie is down in the dumps, and coincidentally bumps into his ex brother in law, who gives him a little pill that changes everything for Eddie. Read moreRead more

X-Men: First Class (2011) Review

I have always been a big fan of the X-Men.  I have seen every X-Men movie, collected the comics, and I used to watch the cartoon religiously.  One thing that was never clear to me was the dynamic between Professor Xavier and his arch rival, Magneto.  The comics, show and movies always implied that they had previously been the best of friends, and due to some falling out, were now the bitterest of enemies.  Finally the story behind Xavier and Magneto’s past is being revealed in the new X-Men movie, First Class. I won’t ruin the movie for you, but there are some spoilers here so if you don’t want to know any of the plot, stop reading now! Read moreRead more
