Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 (2010) Review
I’d like to begin this review by stating that I am not a Harry Potter fan, nor have I read any of the books. J.K. Rowling has somehow amassed a fortune with this series of books, and movies and she is now one of the richest women in all of Britain. Part of me cannot believe that this is true, but the other part of me that has enjoyed many of the Harry Potter movies understands why. The Harry Potter series has mass appeal, and at times can be quite captivating. After massive successes in both paperback and in the box offices, I am happy to say that the latest Harry Potter movie doesn’t disappoint.
I have always felt that Harry Potter was a franchise for children alone. Several of the movies were too childish to truly appeal to adult audiences. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows changes everything. It is very dark, has adult themes throughout, and at times can be quite frightening. The Deathly Hallows was the final book in the Harry Potter saga, but because of its length, Warner Brothers decided to split it into two movies.
I will not spoil everything for you, but I will briefly outline the story. The Evil Lord Voldemort has risen to power. Dumbledore is dead, and the students have left Hogwarts school of magic. Voldemort is actively seeking out Harry Potter so that he can exact his revenge and finally kill Potter. Many of the good wizards in the Order of the Phoenix that are still alive try to help escort Harry to safety. They succeed in bringing him to the Weasly household, but not before a big ambush by death eaters and Voldemort himself. Several good wizards are injured and one is even killed in the battle. Harry eventually tires of putting so many people at risk and sets off with Ron and Hermione to destroy the Horcruxes (which grant Voldemort immortality) and finally kill Voldemort. There are many twists along the way. Ron gets suspicious about Harry and Hermione’s relationship, and there are many ambushes and frightening scenes.
I really enjoyed this movie. There was never a dull moment. The graphics were top notch, the acting was great, and the whole mood of the movie really fit in well with the darkness of the storyline. I can imagine that part 2 will be a great finale to a great saga. I recommend this movie to fans of the Harry Potter franchise, and anyone who appreciates fantasy movies in general. For those with small children, watch out! This movie will scare the little ones! Overall it is quite enjoyable and a treat for fans of all ages. Check it out while it is still in theatres or grab the Blu Ray when it comes out!
