UFC 117: Silva vs. Sonnen PredictionsBy: Phil E
UFC Middleweight Championship
Anderson “The Spider” Silva .vs. Chael Sonnen
To say that Chael Sonnen has talked a lot of trash would be the understatement of the century. Going into this fight, Silva is obviously the favourite, although some seem to think that Sonnen has a chance if he’s able to take Silva to the ground early. The big story in this fight will be whether or not Silva acts professionally.
His last fight in against Damian Mia was a joke to say the least. Dana White stated publicly that if Silva ever disrespects an opponent like that again, he will be released from his UFC contract immediately. Whether or not that’s simply a scare tactic remains to be seen. But either way, it’s definitely a way to add some excitement to tonight’s main-event.
Prediction: Anderson Silva via KO in round 1.
Junior Dos Santos .vs. Roy “Big Country” Nelson
This fight has title implications, as Dana White has stated that the winner will fight the winner of Brock Lesnar and Cain Velasquez. Nelson won season 10 of the Ultimate Fighter reality show, beating favourite Kimbo Slice without much effort. Dos Santos has torn through a couple opponents on his way to Big Country.
Prediction: Junior Dos Santos via KO in round 2
Jon Fitch .vs. Thiago Alves
This fight pits the number two and three welterweights against one another in a rematch from 2006. Since then, Alves has improved his game tremendously. His striking is vicious, and he has great takedown defense, despite what his fight with GSP would suggest.
As for Fitch, he’s won four straight fights in convincing fashion. Another win will most definitely get him a title shot against either GSP or Josh Koscheck.
Prediction: Fitch via unanimous decision
Matt Hughes .vs. Ricardo Almeida
This one is a tough call. Personally, I think Hughes is past him prime and doesn’t have much left in the tank. Also, I think Almeida is poised with take Hughes down as he’s beaten a couple of Almeida’s training partners.
Prediction: Ricardo Almeida via submission in round 3.
Clay “The Carpenter” Guida .vs. Rafael Dos Anjos
I love Guida’s energy and overall personality, as he brings so much excitement to every fight he’s in. He’s coming off an impressive victory, but that was after suffering back-to-back losses to Diego Sanchez and Kenny Florian.
Dos Anjos is also coming off an impressive submission victory over Terry Etim. I think Guida may be able to take him down and control him long enough to earn a decision victory, but in a toss up I’m picking Dos Anjos to catch Guida late in the fight.
Prediction: Rafael Dos Anjos via submission in round 3.
