Carmelo Anthony wants out of Denver?
There have been rumors around the NBA that Carmelo Anthony wants out of Denver. Denver has had a 3 year extension worth $65 million dollars on the table for Carmelo since the NBA draft. Carmelo has had over two months+ to make a decision and still hasn't given the Nuggets his answer. Carmelo has two years left on his current contract, but he can opt out after the upcoming season. That would make him a free agent and the biggest name on the market next season. If he decides not to sign the extension, and to exercise the option on his current contract, he would make $18.5 million in 2011-12. Anthony has until July 1st, 2011 to accept the offer or not. Anthony is mulling over this offer because the main problem here is that after next season a new collective bargaining agreement is supposed to begin for the NBA. Once that is in place, its supposed to help the league more and it will most likely affect the players because they might not be able to get paid as much money as they used to. Anthony was quoted as saying :"I could wake up tomorrow and they could snatch it off the table," according to the Denver newspaper. "I don't know. I don't know what their mind-set is." Anthony said his loyalty to the Nuggets fan base and organization has always been great: "I've shown that over my seven-year stint here," he said, according to The Denver Post. "I don't think anybody can question that. But at this point in time, I have to do what's best for me and my family. I'm just taking my time, figuring out if I want to take that extension or not." Carmelo is one talented player, last season he averaged 28.2 points per game, 6.6 rebounds per game, 3.1 assists a game, 1.3 steals a game and got the line about 9 times a game. 28.2 points per game was his second highest scoring total per game since the 06-07 season when he averaged 28.9 points. Every year he has shown big improvements in his game offensively and on the defensive end which he wasn't great at coming into the league. He is big time player who can change the outcome of any game. The problem in Denver is that he wants the organization to improve the roster so they can compete for a NBA championship, but the Nuggets organization has done nothing to help Melo. They have the same team that lead them to the Western Conference finals two years ago. This past season with coach George Karl being sick, they really weren't the same team and lost in the first round of the playoffs to Utah. Now there are reports all over saying he would love to go to New York and play there because he was born in New York. Many people say he would be able to handle the pressure in the Big Apple. There are also reports out there that are saying he would love to play for Houston or the New Jersey Nets also. He wouldn't mind signing an extension with one of those 3 teams if a deal was able to get done. The Knicks are his top choice. If they can't work out a deal then he would most probably test the market as a free agent. Most people say the Nuggets will wait until the February trade deadline to decide what to do, if Melo hasn't signed the extension they will probably move him because they don't want lose their star player for nothing. The Cavaliers and the Raptors both suffered that fate when they didn't trade their stars and now are left with nothing. Overall I feel Carmelo Anthony should first go talk to the Nuggets GM once they hire a new one, and let him know that he wants to be dealt. If the Nuggets are able to make a deal with one of those three teams he has said in New York, Nets or Houston then he should also try to workout an extension with one of those teams. That is his best option, because then he can go to one of those teams plus he can get that extension he has been wanting. The Denver Nuggets are not a team that can compete for the NBA championships. Sorry Nuggets fans, they just don't have the talent around Melo to do it. This team scores over 100 points a game but their main problem is they cant play defense. They are missing another star player to help Melo even though he has Billups they need another big guy. I guess we will all have to wait it out now and see what Carmelo Anthony decides to do.
